Agenda: Addressing the Soviet Military Intervention in Afghanistan (1979–1989)

The Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan marked a turning point in Cold War geopolitics, leaving lasting political, social, and humanitarian consequences. In this committee, delegates will examine the causes and conduct of the intervention and assess its impact on Afghanistan and the wider international order. Discussions will center on sovereignty, superpower rivalry, resistance movements, and the long-term effects of foreign military involvement on regional stability. Note: This is a double delegate committee.

If a nuclear warhead did MUN it would be Ahaan Pardesi. Ahaan’s killer speeches, incredible knowledge and unforgettable dramatics make any committee he chairs is always a blast. Ahaan has a hawk-like eye for fine details as well as an exceptional ability to scrutinise paperwork and speeches, so if you’re in his committee, he will definitely keep you on your toes! Ahaan is a sucker for one-liners and clever remarks, so make sure you think on the fly. Ahaan is the mastermind of MUN, and never shys down to any challenge that faces him; but, what truly makes Ahaan the complete package is his kindness and compassion, so do not hesitate to approach him for any guidance. Outside the MUN committee, Ahaan excels at strategic games and loves deliberating testing social and ethical issues. He loves solving puzzles and enjoys exploring new places, trying diverse foods, and immersing himself in different cultures. In Ahaan’s committee there is never a dull moment, so buckle up for MSMUN 2024. (Written by Ishan Nemlekar)

Arnav excels at his ability to blend up speeches with humour as well as intellect. As a believer in adding a bit of wit and pizzazz to every POI or speech, he appreciates delegates who can grasp the committee with their ability to utilise research to its potential outside their assigned country. Any delegate who has the ability to pair theatrics, such as sports or pop culture references, along with their research is sure to gain the attention of Monit. Outside of the committee, he loves football both on and off the field. From debates on who is better between Ronaldo and Messi (Ronaldo wins), to how badly Arsenal will bottle the premier league once again– Arnav loves engaging in conversation about anything related to football. One thing’s for sure, when you’re on Monit’s committee, you can be sure it will leave you with an unforgettable experience. (Written by Monit Gajjar)

Vihaan SM

Assistant Director

Ah yes, Vihaan S.M. Where do I start? To begin with, his tendency to come up with some of the most moving and passionate speeches that a committee would see in any of its sessions, armed with his in depth research (a grand total of 4 pages), knowing the UN Charter like it’s the back of his hand, and his witty insults to the incompetence of any country challenging his stance. He loves to poke holes (and reveal some existing ones) in other delegates’ arguments using some points of information he travelled through 4 dimensions to acquire, and some (most*) may even be annoyed at his tendency to regularly raise points of order on factual inaccuracies. However, even if you don’t even know what these terms mean, don’t be afraid, as Vihaan is one of the kindest, most helpful and enthusiastic chairs you will ever meet. Be it a question about what an MUN is, guidance for your research, procedural questions or anything else, he is always willing to lend a helping hand and never judges. On a side note, if you want to earn some brownie points from him, he could talk for hours on end about his love for Rush, playing the guitar, coding, or absolutely anything, because he’ll have substance to talk about. So don’t be afraid of the 6’1” (6’1.8”, basically 6’2”) appearance, as a committee with Vihaan will make any delegate, new or experienced, feel like they’re right at home. (Written by Vihaan S.M.)
